Chamomile’s health benefits

Chamomile! Just as sweet as its name, makes it a perfect tea. Due to its taste and nice perfume, chamomile tea is one of the most flavored teas. A cup of hot tea in the night, before going to bed, calm down the nerves and help you sleep well. But this is not the only advantage of chamomile. Scientists discovered 12 active substances in the composition of a chamomile flower which has so many benefits for our body.

There are two types of chamomile:

  • the roman and
  • the German one.

These two plants look the same but the German one is more spread and more known for its healing properties. Chamomile cream can be found in drugstores, but it is easier and cheaper to prepare an efficient homemade cure. In a cup with hot water add a spoon of chamomile flowers. Cover and let it infuse for 10 minutes. After it cools down to the room temperature, apply it for 5 minutes on the cut or burn using a wad.

Calm nerves

Chamomile contains a substance called apigenin which helps in calming nerves. The scent of the essential oil can be inhaled as a form of aromatherapy. The oil can be vaporized for aromatherapy use. This method works well to soothe nerves and headaches. Infused with other oils, it is easily used for massage purposes for aching muscles as well as joints. To use in a bath as an aromatherapy agent and muscle relaxant, less than 10 drops of chamomile esential oil should be sufficient.

Anti-inflammatory agent

Due to its anti inflammatory and antiseptic properties, chamomile is used in minor health problems. The oil has antibacterial properties and can help to clean and protect wounds like bruises, scalds and other external diseases from infections. In this case the chamomile should be applied topically in the form of a cream or small pledgets soaked in tea. If you suffer from sunburn, mix some chamomile oil with almonds oil and apply it on the red area to reduce the itching sore.

Calms stomach upsets

Further adding onto chamomile benefits, the herb is a wonderful for soothing an upset and rumbling stomach. To ingest the oil, it should be diluted into water, as only a small amount is highly potent. One to two drops in a glass of water should be sufficient for using as a mouthwash or ingesting for stomach problems. Helping to soothe and relax the muscles and intestines’ lining, chamomile helps with poor digestion and aid in irritable bowel syndrome. Chamomile tea could prove to be an effective home remedy for menstrual cramps as well.


While chamomile essential used by people of all ages, it is not recommended for those who are pregnant. There had been rumors that this plant may cause lethal allergies but researchers have identified only some possible reactions (not at all fatal) to German chamomile mostly found in Great Britain. In case you are allergic to plants from Asteraceae family (chamomile belongs to this family) then it is better to avoid using this plant.
